Cernunnos, the Horned God

Cernunnos, the mysterious Celtic horned god (Ink and colours)
Cernunnos is one of the most mysterious Celtic deities. Apart for his wearing stag's antlers, researchers have no real clue as to what this deity might represent. Often associated with fertility (a rather large and vague category). We chose to include him in our stories as a pre-celtic god, from which Lug might be descended.

Celtic indeed, and your description is interesting, as it could be pre-celtic. There are themes of the horned god in the Euskadi pantheon, which is a culture that (judging by the language) is pre-indoeuropean. the one I'm referring to is Akerbeltz
There's an interesting association between Cernunnos and Saint Cornely in Britanny also.
He looks a bit like the Forest Spirit (http://www.users.cloud9.net/~bradmc...) from Princess Mononoke. I've often wondered if there was, at some point in the far distant past, an unrecorded cultural/trade connection between the ancient Japanese and the ancient Celts.
@Al : hi Al, nice to see you here
Could you be so kind as to give us some links of (English) articles on the subject you mention ? We're fascinated by the Euskadi culture, which we are very close to (in terms of friendship) in Breizh. Mirlikovir has been there quite a lot and loves the people, the language and the food :-). I personally though that Akerbeltz was a beer ! Now I learned something. More on him, please !! And the Saint Cornely/Cernunnos association is of the uttermost interest to us, as our backstory in the telling of the Cuchulainn epic explores the early christianisation of Celtic culture. There again, can we ask you for a source ? Thanks a lot for your comments.
@reynard61 : hi fox ! We are absolute fans of Mononoke. This anime really triggered something in us, and we consider it one of the most influentatial anime ever. This is a very interesting aspect of Miyazaki's works. Japan being so far fro continental western Europe, the chance of a cultural link between the two seems unlikely, (that's what we've been told at least). But as you do, we can't help but marvel at the proximities between the Japan and Celt cultures. And the horned stag-god is one ! As for Miyazaki, I remember that this general theme in his works goes back to his early animes, as you can already see a prototype of the Mononoke atmosphere in "Kiki". It's the most mysterious passage in this anime : when the artist eventually shows kiki what she's painting.
I can't help but think of the 'seelies/unseelies'. And in this case, we'd definitely be with the Seelies
See you soon !
Hiya
Well, I only have one link for the basques, since most of what I have read is in spanish... maybe with more time I can encounter something more

As for Saint Cornely. http://celticmythpodshow.com/forums...
And I'm sure you can find more sources even in french.
@Al :
Thanks, Al. This will help us geting started. As we read these resources, we'll have to keywords to help us find more in search engines. Nice of you
