@Roland : Hey, glad you like it. Indeed, this is as close to a full Salmon Leap as we're going to get for the moment Mirlikovir craved for a King Kong like fight. Now he has it. I personally like his action sequences and am always eager to just see what he'll be coming up with. This sequence was as much a surprise to me as it (hopefully) was to you !

Confusing? Well yes kinda; I asked myself why Cúchulainn’s ghost is so very determined to not make friends with the new boar in town. The only answer I could come up with: Obviously, because as a kid he once was badly bullied by a boar strikingly similar to this one … which leads back to the question why the stale-breath-boar doesn’t like Setanta (or at least no more than a hound likes a hare) … and that’s where the mind-boggling begins, especially if you consider that the petrified Setanta sitting in a sidhe never met this shiny boar before.

Anyway, I don’t believe there’s much to my fancy reasoning. When Bairrfhionn fast forwarded himself to manhood, he didn’t seem to become an older person mentally, so I doubt that Cúchulainn’s ghost in his turn remembers what is going to happen to him in the future …

Yeah, I am taking this too serious.

@Eosphoros : Hey, this is a great comment too ! Apart from the fact that circular 'time-travel' like plots always have a natural tendency to go round in circles, circles are specifically what makes myths go round, if I dare say. Where is the beginning, where is the end. Where does fate come from ? Could Achilles really have made the other choice which would have lead him to have children and live happily ever after ? Could Paris not have chosen Aphrodite ?

When beginning to adapt the epic of Cuchulainn, we were facing a choice :
1) simply retell the stories in the exact order in which they occur (even if that simple assertion already is, in itself, quite undoable) without any interpretation of why Setanta would become Cuchulainn
2) try and find some blank space in which we could throw some 'credible' pieces of mythology which can provide, if not a definite explanation, at least a personal interpretation.

Our main pattern results from a point common to almost all of the indo-european mythologies, which tell of a terrible doom awaiting a human being who's made the 'wrong choice' ; not that he really has one, but the choice considered to be wrong because of his rank, position in the society,... The whole war of Troy comes from the fact of Paris choosing Aphrodites (third Dumezilian function) instead of Hera (first function, the more suitable to the son of a king) or at least Athena (second function : war).

When you think of it : Cuchulainn is the son of... his father (we'll not say who for the readers who don't know the story and want to keep some suspense) and his mother is the direct sister of the king of Ulster. The logical path for this boy is to become, one day, the king of Ulster himself. Only, he won't. Not at all. He is too wilful to be a leader of men in the "political" sense. Even as a warrior, he won't act as a leader but rather as a champion. Isn't that surprising ? And he will break almost all the taboos one can think of.

This is our primary thread in retelling this myth in our personal, necessarily flawed (we're not Iron Age celts), way.

@eosphoros: I would think its reason enough to get agressive when a boar belches the wild hunt at you. Expecially if you are kind of a playground bully and your answer on everything is violence...

@xathbad: Yes, it was quite surprising. I expected some teeth-clattering and soul-howling. But with the benefit of hindsight I must admit, this reaction of li'l Cú should have been predictable. Its soooo in character and totally celtic-hero style! Go Setanta! Better to burn than to fade away!

Having missed a few weeks, it's very powerful stuff to view in one sitting! I love the way the boar's eyes burn with that cold fire - it looks so implacable & as if humans don't matter to it at all. Love the way the ghost rises up up up, then comes down to kick arse...well done guys!
